New Strain of Acne Named After Frank Zappa
Scientists have discovered a new strain of acne and they've named it after Frank Zappa. This feels appropriate. Or as Ike Willis would say, "A-pro-pree-ott." Apparently the lead researcher is a big Zappa fan.
Fun facts about this new strain of bacteria:
- The strain moved from humans to the bark of grape vines.
- This is the first time we know of that a microorganism has moved from a human to a plant.
- It probably made the move about 7,000 years ago, when we first started farming grapes. Seems obvious, but thank God they've verified it with a molecular clock analysis.
- Zappa means "hoe" in Italian.
Note: This study was recently published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution, so it's real.
